Rachel Vanoven Newborn Posing Workshop ~ { NPNE Blackpool }

March 22, 2017  •  Leave a Comment

A couple of weeks ago, I had the amazing opportunity to attend Rachel Vanoven's Newborn Workshop. I have for a few years now since I started following her work on social media, wanted to meet one of the greats in the world of newborn photography and attend her workshop but never thought I would ever be able to because she is based in the US, and when she does travel to Europe, spaces on her workshops sell out in minutes.

But thanks to the NPNE, back in September of last year, I checked my email one day to see that I had won a spot to attend her workshop up in Blackpool.

It was only a 2 hour drive away up north to the city of lights so I booked my hotel a few weeks in advance and planned to make the drive, time away just me and my camera and other awesome photographers. I travelled up the night before to attend a night out with other lucky attendees and prop vendors at the show and had a lovely night. I really got catch up with some of my peers that I only get to see a few times a year who happen to be amazing photographers themselves.

Watching Rachel work, learning her ways to wrap, editing tricks, tips on angles, and so much more, was such a great experience.

Even though I have been in the business of newborns for 6 years now. I still surprise myself when I learn new tips and tricks, it's so important for me to improve my skills in my specialism and I'm so pleased I was able to have this chance to meet one of my idols. If you are a parent, please research when choosing a newborn photographer. If you don't book me, book someone who has lots experience with newborns. Don't trust your little one with someone who doesn't have specific and extensive photographic training with newborns.Your baby's safety is the most important thing.

I pride myself on my unique creativity; it matters to me that you are confident your baby is in good hands, and that you will receive good service and superb images, whether it's me you choose or another newborn photographer.

I have specialised in posing babies correctly and safely for almost 6 years now, it’s taken me oodles of training and experience to get where I am today and my learning still continues. I attend up to 5 workshops and seminars throughout the year, catch up with my peers, industry friends and top up my skills with the latest newborn news and trends in photography. It's an amazing career that has introduced me to most of the worlds leading baby portrait photographers and the sweetest clients you can wish for, how many of you get to squeeze a brand new person every week? I do :-)

Excuse our shiny faces, this was after 7 hours of training in a 26 degree room....I managed to grab a selfie with Rachel 📷  at Norbreck Castle Hotel.

Little Master Patel came from Sutton Coldfield to the studio last week at 12 days new, look how snug his is. This little peanuts session maybe one of my favourites of the month, his parents were so chilled and he suited every setup and colour we posed him in.

Harriet, 7 months of happy ~ { Baby Photographer in the East Midlands }

Happy little Harriet came back to the Blue Bean studio for her 7 month sitter session, she was such a content little soul and a pleasure to photograph.

Remember this gorgeous image of her with her big brother Josh back in August?

How we handle a newborn in the photographic studio is completely different than photographing a baby from 6 months months to toddlerhood. It's such a fun transition from the tiny lump of newborn-ness to a laughing, giggling, bright-eyed actual little person, that photographing a child at 6-9 months can be such a joy, and their little personality is coming through, and my word Harriet had buckets full of personality!

Isabelle, 9 days new ~ { East Midlands Newborn Photographer }

Proud big sister Emelia with 9 day old Isabelle came over from Leicestershire for this sibling session at Blue Bean Photography, they were such a beautiful pair of girlies, and Emelia held on to her little sister so protectively.

Rather than expecting a toddler to be good at holding their little baby brother os sister (even though they are still almost babies themselves), sitting up with good posture, and safely staying where you place them, my preference is to photograph little siblings on their backs. Posing them on their back keeps everyone in a safe place and facing the camera and removes the responsibility of the older child having to hold the baby. I use this trick in every sibling session, I find there are so many variations to these poses and parents just adore them.
